The Smithfield Figure Skating Club was formed by a group of local skaters in 1976, and two years later became a member of the United States Figure Skating Association, the national governing body for figure skating. SFSC, a non-profit organization, offers skaters (3 years old through adult) skating instruction and off ice conditioning sessions. Programs run year-round at the Smithfield Municipal Ice Rink. SFSC offers sessions in basic skills, skating skills, freestyle, power/edge and ice dance.
During a typical winter season, SFSC has sessions 2 days per week, offering sessions for the recreational skater through the competitive skater. Sessions are regulated by test levels and caps are set on the maximum skaters allowed on the ice to help prevent accidents.
SFSC hosted the New England Figure Skating Championships in 1987 and 1992, holds a Basic Skills Competition annually and has previously hosted the Smithfield Open. For over 25 years, SFSC held the Annual Figure Skating Exhibition to benefit the American Diabetes Association, allowing all club members to skate for fun without the pressure of competition, and inviting family and friends to enjoy the show.
